The Dangers of Art School

What, you want to be an artist? It’s difficult for parents to encourage their kids to pursue a degree in a discipline they don’t see a solid financial future in. Some exploration of what art school has to offer may help alleviate those fears. My art school friends have gone on to be everything from fine woodworkers, teachers, architects, computer programmers, etc. Art school teaches skill but it also teaches a way of thinking and seeing the world.

The College for Creative Studies recognizes this hesitancy and created a new ad campaign that addresses it with a humorous bent – PSA style posters likening art school conversations to those talks about the use of illicit substances. The ads aim to encourage active conversation between parents and children, recognizing the value of an art education.

I’m proud to live in the one state that has a state run college dedicated to art education. I didn’t go there but spent many good times with friends in those halls.

Being a former comparative literature and creative writing major, I can’t say that my education prepared me for the world any better than if I’d attended art school, though I can now write a solid proposal for work.
