Growing an Avocado Tree

My great grandmother could grow an avocado plant from a pit every time she tried, and she tried quite often judging by the number of avocado plants in her apartment. Of course, they would never produce fruit, what with us living in New England, but there is still a satisfaction in turning a seed into a plant.

Years later, during an avocado eating frenzy, Grammie’s plants came to mind and I decided to have a go. I failed completely, but I may be able to redeem myself. I came across this link on how to grow your own avocado plant. Based on what I read, I’m thinking I didn’t know top from bottom. Wouldn’t be the first time, but I’ll try again. It’s 50/50 odds after all.

I’ve been told that avocados are often irradiated these days, so getting them to grow can be impossible when this is the case. Some day I’d like to be able to plant one too! :)
