Photographer Sacha Goldberger created these works that harken back to the Flemish style of portraiture, complete with collars. He envisioned the entire series and chose the costume designer and stylists. He even used real animals. He says of the photograph above:
I wanted my girlfriend to pose with the Marabou Stork. Unfortunately, it escaped and flew all over the studio. It felt like we were in Jurassic Park.
And I couldn’t resist to shoot my grandmother (otherwise known as Super Mamika).
I hadn’t seen his work before, but I followed the Super Mamika link (as you most definitely should) and instantly fell in love with his work and his grandma. According to The Artistery:
A few years ago, Sacha Goldberger found his 91-year-old Hungarian grandmother Frederika feeling lonely and depressed. To cheer her up, he suggested that they shoot a series of outrageous photographs in unusual costumes, poses, and locations. Grandma reluctantly agreed, but once they got rolling, she couldn’t stop smiling.
And so began the story of Mamika’s superhero life. The series is utterly charming, as are the many other photos he has taken of his grandmother. You can view images from his Super Mamika book on his website.

I love when classical portraiture is brought to life like this.
