Birds Dressed up as Birds

I can’t imagine there is anyway you’d ever get a living bird into one of these costumes, but that’s why they’re art, not ready-to-wear fashion. Laurel Roth created this series, “Biodiversity Reclamation Suits for Urban Pigeons” by crocheting custom made costumes for mannequin pigeons.

I’ve always liked pigeons. They’re a little weird and quirky, make funny sounds, but most people consider them a nuisance. Flying rats is a term I’ve heard bandied about – wouldn’t those be bats? Yeah, OK, they poop everywhere and eat trash. So do dogs…just saying.  I like the idea of giving the common pigeon a disguise so they’ll be treated with more respect. Everyone would be clamoring to give crumbs to the fuzzy dodo, dawdling around Harvard Square.
