Ever wonder how the various citrus fruits are related? Turns out it’s better to say they are inter-related, intimately inter-related. Buntworthy over at Cut Squash was pondering the question, what is an orange?, and decided to delve for an answer. B-worthy created the Venn diagram (above) to give us all a better understanding of just how inbred citrus really is.
As you can see from the diagram, the only two fruits that stand on their own are the key lime and the kumquat. It’s strange, though coincidental, that they are the only two that start with the letter k. Stranger still, the lime is a combination of citron and papeada yet the key lime stands alone. Grapefruit is a combination of pomelo, mandarin and orange (the mandarin really gets around). In terms of flavor profile, I would not have expected that – where did the bitterness of the grapefruit come from? It’s much milder in the pomelo.
